Bungalow Refurbishment: A Design Transformation by Thomas Geissert

Elegance and Minimalism Redefined

The bungalow refurbishment project by Thomas Geissert showcases a stunning blend of simple elegance and sophisticated design. With a focus on architectural responsibility and durability, this transformation breathes new life into a 1960s bungalow, creating a harmonious and spacious living environment.

Architecturally, the goal of this project was to break up the rooms and create a new spatial structure that maximizes space and incorporates the outdoors into the living area. This was achieved by increasing the window areas, replacing glass blocks with new windows, and partially opening parapets to floor level. The result is a seamless transition from inside to outside, blurring the boundaries between the two.

The aesthetic reduction of forms, materials, and colors plays a crucial role in the overall impression of this design. Black slate flooring in the interior and exterior, along with smoked oak parquet in the sleeping areas, adds a touch of sophistication. The discreet color and lighting concept further enhance the harmonious atmosphere, while small design breaks add subtle visual interest.

One of the standout features of this design is the integration of a sauna in the former tank room and a pool in the garden. These additions not only enhance the functionality of the space but also contribute to the overall sense of luxury and relaxation.

In terms of technology, the bungalow underwent a comprehensive energy renovation to bring it up to the 21st century. From the installation of a solar thermal system and a water-bearing stove for heating support to the incorporation of a photovoltaic system, this design embraces sustainable practices. Additionally, the rainwater infiltration is managed through an infiltration trench, further reducing the environmental impact.

With 180 square meters of living space, this bungalow refurbishment project showcases the power of thoughtful design and meticulous attention to detail. The transformation of this 1960s bungalow into a modern, elegant living space is a testament to Thomas Geissert's expertise and vision.

Thomas Geissert and his team have successfully preserved the character of the original building while allowing the new design to confidently emerge. The result is a space that seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating a truly unique and captivating living environment.

This design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2021. This award celebrates designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while providing fulfillment and positive feelings. Thomas Geissert's bungalow refurbishment project is a true testament to the power of well-designed, practical, and innovative creations.
